A car tax conviction against London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been withdrawn after it emerged he was targeted by a "scam". Magistrates in Hereford formally reopened and withdrew the case on Thursday, 3 September 2026, following a request from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
Mr Khan had been found guilty last month of failing to tax a 24-year-old Nissan Micra, a vehicle City Hall officials confirmed did not belong to him or Transport for London. He was ordered to pay a £220 fine, £85 in costs, and £35.84 for unpaid tax.
A spokesperson for Mr Khan stated that the Mayor has been the victim of similar scams previously, where individuals falsely registered vehicles in his name. The DVLA is reportedly aware of such behaviour.
