J Sainsbury, the UK's second-largest supermarket chain, held preliminary merger conversations with rival Morrisons earlier this year. Sky News' City editor Mark Kleinman revealed these discussions last week.
According to the Financial Times, Sainsbury's subsequently terminated these discussions. However, there is a belief that this may be a pause rather than a final halt to negotiations for a combination involving Asda, Morrisons, or Sainsbury's.
The impetus for such a transaction is reported to have strengthened due to factors including heightened food insecurity, growing anxiety about employment costs, and pressure from ministers on UK competition regulators to be 'pro-growth'. The emergence of discounters Aldi and Lidl as significant players is also cited as a major contributor to the increased plausibility of a deal between two larger supermarkets.
