England international Bukayo Saka has revealed he is prepared to "take the gamble" on his physical condition to play a full part in the national team's World Cup campaign. The Arsenal winger has been contending with an Achilles injury that impacted the latter stages of his domestic season, leading to concerns over his match fitness ahead of the tournament.
Saka sustained the injury in March, causing him to miss a month of action, including an international break. Despite this, he featured prominently for Arsenal as they pushed for Premier League and Champions League honours. Speaking ahead of England's Group L opener against Croatia in Dallas, Saka stated he was "ready to go" but conceded he had taken a calculated risk with his fitness during Arsenal's crucial run-in. He emphasised that players often face a difficult choice between playing through discomfort and sitting out, knowing that performance expectations remain high regardless.
The 22-year-old expressed a marked improvement in his condition since March, attributing his recovery to the collaborative efforts of Arsenal's medical team, manager Mikel Arteta, and the England medical staff. "I am feeling better than I have felt for the last few months. I am ready to go," Saka affirmed, signalling his intent to be available for selection. However, England manager Thomas Tuchel had previously indicated during the pre-tournament camp in Florida that he doubted Saka's ability to play a full 90 minutes.
Saka also touched upon the unique dynamic of competing for a starting spot with his Arsenal and England teammate, Noni Madueke. The pair, who are close friends, find themselves in direct contention for the right-wing position. Saka described their relationship as "quite unique" and likened Madueke to a "brother," highlighting their mutual respect and desire for each other's success. He added that he would offer his full support to Madueke, or any other player, if they were selected ahead of him, underscoring the collective goal of England's success.
Should Saka not be deemed fit enough to start Wednesday's match, Madueke is widely expected to step into the role. England's World Cup journey begins with high hopes, and the fitness of key players like Saka will be crucial to their aspirations.
