Santander has introduced a new Rewards Credit Card designed to offer consumers a significant cashback incentive on common expenditures. The headline feature is a 3% cashback rate on spending related to everyday travel, eating out, and takeaways, which applies for the first 12 months of card ownership. Beyond this introductory period, and for all other purchases from the outset, a 0.25% cashback rate will be applied indefinitely. This new offering aims to appeal to a broad range of UK consumers looking to maximise returns on their daily spending.
Key benefits of the new Santander Rewards Credit Card include the absence of an annual fee, a notable advantage compared to some other reward cards on the market. Furthermore, there is no monthly cap on the amount of cashback a cardholder can earn, allowing high spenders to accumulate substantial rewards. The card also facilitates fee-free spending when used abroad in the local currency, making it a potentially attractive option for international travellers. For instance, a customer spending £250 monthly on qualifying purchases could earn £7.50 in cashback each month, totalling £90 over the initial year.
However, prospective cardholders should be aware of certain stipulations regarding the 3% cashback rate. The eligibility for higher cashback is determined by how retailers are categorised by card networks using merchant category codes (MCCs). This means that some purchases which might intuitively seem to qualify, such as spending at pubs, bars, or hotel restaurants, may not fall under the specific categories for the 3% rate and would instead receive the standard 0.25%. Similarly, while most supermarket petrol stations are expected to qualify, some may not. Overseas transactions are also subject to MCC variations, potentially affecting the cashback rate received.
The card carries a representative APR of 24.9% (variable), which is competitive within the cashback card market. Financial experts typically advise that cashback credit cards are most beneficial when the balance is paid in full each month. This strategy prevents interest charges from eroding or even outweighing any cashback earned. For cash withdrawals, including those made abroad, a 3% transaction fee (minimum £3) applies, alongside an interest rate of 29.9% per annum from the day of withdrawal.
To be eligible for the Santander Rewards Credit Card, applicants must be at least 18 years old, permanently reside in the UK, and have an annual income of at least £10,500. There are also credit history requirements, including not having been declared bankrupt, or having had a County Court Judgment (CCJ) or Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) within the last six years. This ensures the card is offered responsibly to individuals with a stable financial background.
This new card positions itself alongside other cashback offerings from Santander, such as the Edge Credit Card (1% cashback, £48 annual fee, £10 monthly cap) and the All in One Credit Card (0.5% cashback, £36 annual fee, £10 monthly cap), both of which have annual fees and cashback caps. It also competes with cards from other providers, like the American Express Cashback Credit Card, which offers a higher initial rate but has an annual fee, and the fee-free American Express Everyday Cashback Credit Card.
