Sark, an island in the Channel Islands, is proposing to protect 30% of its waters to safeguard marine life. The plan would see about 50 sq miles (128.8 sq km) of sea around the island receive additional protection.
The proposal was developed by Sark's agriculture, environment and sea fisheries committee, with support from the Blue Marine Foundation, local fishermen, and marine experts. Freddie Watson, Channel Islands project manager at Blue Marine Foundation, stated that marine protection could help sensitive habitats and support sustainable fishing.
Evidence was used to identify important habitats, including previously unmapped seagrass areas, to focus protection where it is most needed. The waters around Sark are home to various species, including European spiny lobster, rays, catsharks, octopus, and pink sea fans. Watson also noted that some of these habitats are important for drawing down and locking away carbon.
