Former Everton defender and Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman has been training with his local Gaelic football club, Killybegs, to maintain his fitness. The 37-year-old has been without a club since leaving Everton at the end of last season, concluding a 17-year tenure with the Premier League side.
Despite social media speculation on Sunday, Coleman did not feature for Killybegs in their Donegal Senior Football Championship opener. He is understood to be using the training to stay sharp as he searches for a new professional football club, with the new season in England just weeks away.
Coleman, who made 433 appearances for Everton, declined a coaching contract offer from the club in May, stating his desire to continue his playing career. He cited the prospect of adding to his 81 Republic of Ireland caps as a key motivator, having spoken to manager Heimir Hallgrimsson about remaining involved if fit.
While a return to Gaelic football with Killybegs has been mentioned by Coleman previously, it is considered unlikely while his professional football career is still ongoing, even as a free agent.
