Search continues for vessel in distress with five people in English Channel

Rescue efforts are continuing overnight for a vessel with five people on board reported to be in distress in the English Channel.

Rescue efforts are continuing overnight for a vessel reported to be "in distress" in the English Channel, according to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. Five people are said to be on board the vessel.

A helicopter, plane, and lifeboats were launched on Saturday evening south-west of Eddystone Lighthouse, off Plymouth. RNLI lifeboats from Falmouth and Plymouth are involved in the operation.

Several civilian vessels, including a number of French fishing vessels, appear to be assisting the rescue, according to maritime monitoring website Marine Traffic. A HM Coastguard aircraft has also been flying over the area.

Officials have not confirmed further details about the type of boat or the nature of the emergency. The Met Office had forecast moderate to rough conditions, some thundery showers, and deteriorating visibility off the coast of Plymouth overnight.
