The UK could re-enter the EU through a "Switzerland plus" package, according to Bernd Lange, the head of a European Parliament committee. Mr Lange, who was involved in Brexit negotiations, said such a deal could be negotiated within months if the UK decided to deepen its ties with the bloc.
Mr Lange stated, "I would love to see the UK back," noting that the EU missed the UK in decision-making due to its history of promoting open markets and democracy. He described the Switzerland framework as a potential model for the UK, but suggested a "Switzerland plus" model would offer some engagement beyond a "passive" agreement, although not full membership.
The German MEP, who chairs the European Parliament's trade committee, also supported Andy Burnham's call for the EU to include the UK in 'Made in Europe' legislation. This legislation could restrict UK suppliers from public procurement tenders and some corporate contracts. Mr Lange argued that the UK should be included as it is already aligned with the EU on environmental standards and employment laws.
The 'Made in Europe' package, also known as the Industrial Accelerator Act, is expected to receive political approval by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
