Severe thunderstorms will batter much of the UK today, with Met Office yellow weather warnings covering large parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland as forecasters warn of flooding and travel chaos.
The warnings, active from this morning, predict 30-40mm of rainfall within hours across affected areas, with isolated spots facing up to 60mm. Such intense downpours threaten to overwhelm drainage systems, causing surface water flooding on roads and potentially in homes and businesses. Motorists face sudden visibility loss and treacherous driving conditions.
Southern and central England, including London and Birmingham, will bear the brunt of the storms. Temperatures will hit 24-26°C before the weather breaks. Wales's southern and central regions face similar yellow warnings, whilst Scotland's central belt and eastern coast expect thunderstorms, though less widespread than further south. Northern Ireland's eastern areas will also see thundery conditions.
The Met Office warns of hail and wind gusts reaching 40-50 mph in exposed areas during peak storms. This weather cocktail could trigger power cuts and damage trees or temporary structures. Rail and road networks face likely delays or cancellations.
Residents should secure loose garden furniture and avoid unnecessary travel during the worst conditions. Those caught outdoors must seek indoor shelter and stay clear of trees or metal objects. Drivers should reduce speed, maintain safe distances and prepare for rapidly changing road conditions.
