School crossing wardens, often known as lollipop men and women, in Sheffield have been provided with body-worn cameras. This measure is intended to tackle abuse and aggressive behaviour from drivers.
Sheffield City Council stated that wardens at several unspecified locations across the city would receive the cameras as part of a new initiative. The local authority believes this will create a safer environment for families walking to school and offer reassurance to staff working alone.
The council added that wardens have experienced "unacceptable behaviour" and dangerous driving from a "small" number of motorists. Jefferson Nwokeoma, the authority's assistant director of city transport, commented that the cameras will help protect staff, provide evidence, and encourage drivers to follow road rules, ultimately aiming for safer school journeys.
