The shortlist for the 10th annual 4thWrite prize, a short story competition for unpublished writers of colour, has been announced. The prize is run by publisher 4th Estate in association with The Guardian.
Six stories have been selected for the shortlist. Judge Gurnaik Johal, who was shortlisted for the prize in 2018, described the stories as “affecting in new and surprising ways.”
The shortlisted authors and their stories include Clementine Wolodarsky for I Only Mug Girls, Darren Chan for Love Bite, Ope Adedeji for Omugwo, Meher Iqbal for Darkroom, Diya Nair for Minty Fresh, and Svetlana Chigozie Onye for London 2060.
The winner of the 4thWrite prize will be awarded £1,000, a one-day publishing workshop at 4th Estate, and will have their story published on The Guardian website.
