Naro, a medieval town in Sicily's Agrigento province, has become the latest Italian location to offer houses for as little as one euro (85p). The town has joined the Case a 1 Euro scheme, an urban regeneration initiative designed to reclaim unused properties and attract new residents to underpopulated areas.
Homes available through the scheme are often run down and require major structural improvements. Among the five properties currently listed, three- to six-bedroom detached homes are for sale and are described as "to be renovated."
The initiative, which started in 2008 in Salemi, aims to "contribute to the recovery and future of Naro's historic centre." Other Sicilian villages participating in similar schemes include Mussomeli, Sambuca di Sicilia, and Caltagirone.
