Simpson's Tavern to reopen as Cloth Cornhill modern British restaurant

Simpson's Tavern, the City's oldest chophouse, is set to reopen on 1 October 2026 as Cloth Cornhill, a modern British restaurant.

  • Cloth Cornhill will open on 1 October 2026 at the site of the former Simpson's Tavern.
  • The new restaurant will offer chops, steaks, and day boat fish, reflecting the menu of the original Cloth restaurant.
  • The Grade II listed venue has been restored, retaining original features and historical elements.

Simpson's Tavern, which closed in 2022 after operating as the City's oldest chophouse since 1757, is scheduled to reopen on 1 October 2026. The venue will be reborn as Cloth Cornhill, a modern British restaurant.

Owners Joy Haynes, Ben Butterworth, and Tom Hurst have spent the past year restoring the Grade II listed building. Many original details, including wood-panelled walls, bow windows, tiling, fireplaces, and high-backed wooden seating booths, have been preserved.

Cloth Cornhill will serve lunch and dinner from Monday to Friday, featuring a menu that includes chops, steaks, and day boat fish, similar to the trio's original Cloth restaurant in Farringdon. A lunchtime set menu will be available at £24 for two courses and £29 for three courses. The cocktail list will include a regularly changing vintage cocktail, starting with a 1970s negroni recipe.
