The Secretary of State for Northern Ireland has announced that Sir John O’Hara KC will lead an independent review into the Parades Commission. The review will focus on the Commission’s decision-making processes and organisational governance.
Sir Chris Bryant, Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, stated that the review is intended to restore confidence in how decisions are reached, particularly after a recent court judgment. He described Sir John O’Hara KC as uniquely qualified due to his legal experience and independence.
The review's scope includes auditing internal governance, evaluating engagement with parade organisers, residents, and police, and examining the recent judicial review proceedings. However, it will not cover the Public Processions (Northern Ireland) Act 1998, specific parade permissions, or Commissioner appointments.
Final preparations are also underway to launch a public appointments process for new commissioners, following a resignation and upcoming end of tenure for current members.
