Six people have died, including the suspected gunman, following a mass shooting on Friday in Missaukee County, a rural area of northern Michigan. State police confirmed that another individual is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Michigan state police identified the suspected gunman as Chad Hickman, 39, in a social media statement. Police said Hickman fled the scene, prompting a manhunt. He was later located by state police in a wooded area, where he and another person were found deceased.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting are unclear. Lt Ashley Miller, a Michigan state police spokesperson, stated that investigators are committed to a thorough investigation.

Court records indicate Hickman was undergoing a divorce. He had also pleaded guilty in 2024 to two misdemeanours from a 2010 offence: contributing to the delinquency of a child and child abuse in the fourth degree, which can involve a reckless act harming or endangering a minor. He was sentenced to over a year in county jail for these charges.
