Heavy rain will lash much of the UK this week before turning to snow in northern regions, the Met Office warned today as it issued yellow weather alerts across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The warnings cover large swathes of the country, with forecasters advising the public to prepare for travel disruption and localised flooding as persistent rainfall batters western areas. Several tens of millimetres of rain could fall over short periods before colder air moves in from the north.
Northern England and Scotland face the highest risk of snow accumulation as temperatures plummet. Upland areas could see 5-10cm of snow, with exposed locations potentially experiencing heavier falls. Even lower elevations may see sleet or brief snow showers, particularly overnight when temperatures drop to 0-2°C in northern regions and 3-5°C in southern England.
Coastal areas will also battle wind gusts of 30-40mph, creating treacherous driving conditions alongside the rain and snow. The Met Office has warned of potential road closures on higher routes and public transport delays, urging commuters to check travel information and allow extra journey time.
The dramatic weather shift follows a mild start to the week for many areas. Forecasters continue monitoring the developing system and may update warnings as conditions evolve. Residents are advised to ensure vehicles are winter-ready, carry emergency supplies and watch for slippery surfaces.
