The charity Kindred Squared has announced its potty-training scheme will be rolled out in Solihull. The initiative provides resources and support, including increased training for nurseries, schools, and professionals.
This follows a survey by Kindred Squared which found that almost a third of children starting school in the West Midlands last year were not fully toilet-trained. Additionally, 42% of those arriving in reception were deemed not school-ready by primary school staff.
Solihull Council has reported a higher proportion of children arriving at school in nappies or pull-ups compared to a few years ago. The new scheme will be part of its wider Best Start in Life programme.
A pilot of the scheme in York, which began in April, involved sending parents potty-training and school readiness guides with school place offers. Workshops were held, resources distributed, and support was offered through various community services. This pilot resulted in the number of non-toilet-trained children starting reception falling by almost half.
