Musician Sombr has dismissed claims that he is a "nepo baby" or an industry plant, stating that suggestions his father's career contributed to his success are "incredibly insane." The 21-year-old, whose real name is Shane Michael Boose, discussed the online scrutiny of new artists in an interview with ELLE.
Sombr's father, Andy Boose, was a musician before transitioning to events production for HIV/AIDS organisations. His mother, Bennah Serfaty, also works in HIV/AIDS prevention. Sombr expressed pride in his parents' dedication, telling ELLE, "To think that that could help me get signed or become a big artist because my dad devotes his life to fight AIDS is just incredibly insane."
Sombr began releasing music independently as a teenager. He recalled that his breakthrough came in 2022 after uploading 'Caroline' to TikTok, which led to approaches from various record labels. He ultimately left school and signed with Warner Records at the age of 16.
After a period of less impactful releases, his fortunes changed with 'Back To Friends', written around Christmas 2024, and 'Undressed'. Both tracks featured on his debut album 'I Barely Know Her', released in August 2025. NME described the album as "smart, emotional and surprisingly upbeat" in a four-star review.
Earlier this year, Taylor Swift praised Sombr during her Songwriters Hall Of Fame induction speech, where he performed 'Cardigan' and 'Dear John'. Sombr has also announced a UK and European tour for 2027, adding three extra nights at London's O2 due to demand.
