Spain, the reigning Women's World Cup champions and top-ranked team, defeated the second-ranked USWNT 2-0 in a friendly match held in Washington DC. The Spanish side established an early lead with goals from Patri Guijarro in the third minute and Eva Navarro just 11 minutes later.
The USWNT, who won gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics, struggled with defensive lapses and midfield issues in the first half. Despite an improved second-half performance and adjustments to their high press, they were unable to score. Lily Yohannes missed a penalty in the 67th minute, which was saved by Nanclares.
Both teams were not at full strength, with several important players sidelined due to injuries. For the US, Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey were out, while Spain missed two-time Ballon d’Or winner Aitana Bonmatí, Vicky Lopez, Mariona Caldentey, Cata Coll, Clàudia Pina, and Mapi León.
The match was the first of two friendlies between the two footballing powerhouses. The US still needs to qualify for the upcoming Women's World Cup through a regional tournament starting next month, while Spain has already secured their place.
