The Spanish television series 'La Mesías', or 'The Messiah', has premiered on the streaming service Mubi. Originally released in Spain in 2023, the seven-episode drama centres on an estranged brother and sister, Enric and Irene, who discover their siblings have become a viral pop band.
The series, described as ambitious and bizarre, was created by the Spanish duo Los Javis, who recently won best director at Cannes for their upcoming film 'La Bola Negra'. 'La Mesías' delves into the family's past, exploring themes of emotional neglect, parental narcissism, and religious fanaticism, alongside the unexpected inclusion of UFOs.
A notable promotional stunt for the show involved the fictional band Stella Maris performing "Christian electronic dance music" at the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona in 2024. The performance, which included haunting home movies and religious iconography, was real, though the band itself was not.
