Rivals are preparing for a potential by-election in Clacton in the coming months, amid speculation that a standards inquiry into a £5m gift to Nigel Farage is nearing its conclusion.
Conservative sources have indicated the party is ready to contest Farage’s seat. However, senior figures within the shadow cabinet are reportedly divided on the winnability of the seat, given Farage's victory in a by-election over the summer. Other parties, including the hard-right Restore Britain, are also expected to put forward candidates, after boycotting the August poll.
The investigation into the gift began after a May revelation that crypto-billionaire Christopher Harborne had given Farage £5m before the 2024 election. Farage, the Reform leader, has stated it was a personal matter and did not require declaration, while rules specify that financial support related to an MP's job must be registered if given within 12 months before entering parliament.
If a serious breach is identified, the commissioner would pass a memorandum to the standards committee, which would then decide on a penalty. Should Parliament agree to a suspension exceeding 10 days, a recall petition could be initiated, requiring signatures from 10% of constituents.
