Streaming giant Spotify has introduced a new initiative, 'Reserved by Spotify', designed to give an artist's most dedicated followers early access to concert tickets. The system will identify eligible 'superfans' and reserve two tickets for them before they become available to the general public, aiming to reward loyalty and address issues with ticket availability.
Initially, this feature is launching in the United States and is exclusively for Premium subscribers aged 18 and over. The first artist to utilise 'Reserved' will be Role Model for his upcoming tour. Fans deemed eligible will receive notifications, allowing them to secure tickets ahead of the public sale, which for Role Model's tour begins on June 23rd. Spotify has confirmed it will not levy any fees on these transactions.
Currently, 'Reserved' is limited to artists performing at Live Nation concerts, with ticket sales facilitated through Ticketmaster. However, Spotify has indicated its ambition to broaden the scheme over time, intending to incorporate more partners, including smaller venues, and to expand its availability to international users. This suggests a potential future rollout in the UK market, which would be a significant development for British music fans.
The move comes as the music industry continues to grapple with the challenge of ticket touting, where automated bots often snap up tickets immediately upon release, only for them to be resold at inflated prices. By prioritising genuine fans, Spotify hopes to provide a fairer system and ensure tickets reach those who truly want to attend live shows. For Spotify itself, 'Reserved' also serves as a strategic incentive to encourage paid subscriptions and enhance user engagement within its platform.
Spotify's algorithm for identifying superfans goes beyond simply repeated plays. It analyses a range of signals, including streams, shares, and overall app activity, to ensure authentic engagement. The company has stated it will monitor activity to prevent manipulation by bots or AI agents, ensuring that passive listening in the background will not artificially boost a user's superfan status. Furthermore, the system considers a user's location to ensure offers are relevant to shows near them. While not every superfan will receive an offer every time due to limited availability, the initiative marks a notable shift in how streaming services might directly benefit their most engaged users.
