  • All three masts of the SS Richard Montgomery have been successfully removed.
  • The masts have been transferred to the Historic Dockyard Chatham for conservation.
  • The project was completed ahead of schedule and under budget.

The SS Richard Montgomery mast removal project has concluded, with all three masts successfully taken from the World War 2 cargo ship wreck. The masts have been delivered to the Historic Dockyard Chatham for conservation and preservation.

The removal was recommended by an expert advisory group to reduce the load on the vessel's structure, which sank in 1944 carrying an estimated 1,400 tonnes of munitions. This complex project was completed ahead of schedule and below forecast costs, thanks to collaboration between the Department for Transport (DfT), the United States Maritime Administration, industry, and local partners.

The wreck will continue to be monitored, with an exclusion zone and existing flying restrictions remaining in place. The government stated its commitment to the safe management of the site, prioritising public safety.

Why this matters: The removal of the masts reduces risk to the structure of the SS Richard Montgomery, which carries a significant munitions cargo, supporting the long-term safe management of the site.
