The scenic St Ives Branch Line in Cornwall has officially reopened to passengers, following the successful completion of a substantial nine-day infrastructure upgrade project by Network Rail. The popular tourist route, which connects St Erth with St Ives, resumed normal services on Monday, 18th March, much to the relief of local residents and businesses in anticipation of the upcoming holiday season.
Network Rail invested approximately £3 million into the crucial works, which commenced on 9th March. The comprehensive programme focused on enhancing the line's reliability and resilience. Key elements of the upgrade included the replacement of sections of track, renewal of points – the movable sections of track that allow trains to switch lines – and significant improvements to several level crossings along the route. These upgrades are designed to provide a smoother and more dependable journey for the thousands of passengers who use the line annually.
The St Ives Branch Line is a vital transport link for West Cornwall, serving not only daily commuters but also attracting a considerable number of tourists drawn to the picturesque coastal town. Its closure necessitated alternative transport arrangements, with bus replacement services operating between St Erth and St Ives during the works.
