Swiss tennis player Stan Wawrinka was given an emotional send-off at the US Open following the final Grand Slam match of his career. The 41-year-old, a three-time major champion, is set to retire at the end of the current season.

Wawrinka received a rapturous reception from thousands of fans in the 8,000-capacity Grandstand court after his straight-set defeat by Italy's Matteo Berrettini. He made heart gestures to the crowd and expressed his gratitude for the wildcard that allowed him to play.

Tournament organisers initially overlooked Wawrinka for a wildcard, but he was granted one at the last minute after American recipient Patrick Kypson withdrew. Wawrinka stated that playing until 41 was partly to experience such moments and thanked fans for their support over the years.
