Stan Wawrinka is set to play in this year's US Open after a wild card spot opened up. The 2016 champion had initially not been included in the USTA's list of eight wild-card entries.
The 41-year-old, who is retiring at the end of the season, had posted a social media message marking the conclusion of his Grand Slam career. However, Patrick Kypson, who had been awarded a wild card, withdrew due to injury on Wednesday, providing Wawrinka with an opportunity.
Wawrinka stated, “I’m incredibly excited to accept the wild card for the 2026 US Open and look forward to competing in front of the fans in New York once again.” This will mark his final major appearance in the main draw at Flushing Meadows.
The initial decision not to grant Wawrinka a wild card had drawn criticism within tennis circles. His world ranking of 127 placed him just outside direct main draw entry.
