The Met Office has issued widespread weather warnings for Storm Dave, which is set to bring significant disruption to more than half of the United Kingdom. Strong winds, potentially reaching 70 mph in exposed coastal areas, and heavy rainfall are forecast to affect large parts of England, Wales, and portions of Scotland and Northern Ireland from late Tuesday into Wednesday.
Yellow warnings for wind are in place across much of England and Wales, with an amber warning specifically targeting coastal areas of the South West and parts of the Welsh coast, where the most severe impacts are anticipated. These areas could experience gusts of 60-70 mph, posing a risk of damage to buildings, falling trees, and significant disruption to transport networks. Inland areas are still expected to see winds of 45-55 mph.
In addition to the strong winds, heavy rain is also a key concern. While specific rainfall totals will vary, areas under yellow warnings for rain, particularly across western Scotland and parts of Northern Ireland, could see between 20-40mm of rain, with isolated spots potentially reaching 60mm on higher ground. This could lead to localised flooding, particularly in areas already saturated from recent wet weather.
Temperatures during the storm are expected to remain relatively mild for the time of year, generally ranging between 8 and 12 degrees Celsius across the affected regions. However, the strong winds will create a significant wind chill factor, making it feel considerably colder. The Met Office has urged the public to take precautions, including securing loose items in gardens, checking local flood alerts, and planning for potential travel delays or cancellations across road, rail, air, and ferry services.
For England, the most severe impacts are expected in the South West, including Cornwall, Devon, and parts of Somerset, due to the amber wind warning. Other regions, including the Midlands, South East, and North West, are under yellow warnings for wind. Wales is also largely covered by yellow and amber warnings, with a particular focus on its western and southern coastlines. In Scotland, western and central areas are under yellow warnings for wind and rain, while Northern Ireland faces yellow warnings for both wind and rain, with particular concern for coastal regions.
