Forecasters are advising the public to prepare for heavy rainfall and strong winds, which could lead to travel disruption and localised flooding in several areas from late Tuesday into Wednesday.
Yellow weather warnings have been activated for Northern Ireland, western Scotland, and parts of northwest England and Wales. These warnings highlight the potential for widespread disruption, including difficult driving conditions and possible delays to public transport. Coastal areas, particularly in the west, are cautioned about large waves and spray, with wind gusts potentially reaching 50-60 mph in exposed locations.
For Northern Ireland and western Scotland, rainfall totals could reach 30-50mm quite widely, with isolated spots seeing up to 70mm over higher ground. This volume of rain, falling on already saturated ground in some areas, increases the risk of surface water flooding and river level rises. In England, the northwest is most likely to experience the brunt of the wet weather, while Wales could see similar conditions, especially in its western and northern regions.
Despite the blustery and wet conditions, temperatures are expected to remain relatively mild for the time of year. Daytime highs are forecast to be around 10-12°C across much of the affected areas, preventing any immediate concerns about wintry precipitation. However, the combination of wind and rain will make conditions feel significantly colder, and the public is advised to dress appropriately and exercise caution when outdoors.
