The RAC has issued an urgent travel alert as Storm Goretti barrels towards the UK, with Met Office amber warnings now in force for dangerous winds and torrential rain across multiple regions.
Wind speeds of 60-70 mph are forecast inland, rising to potentially devastating 70-80 mph gusts along exposed coasts. The storm poses a serious risk to life and property, threatening to topple trees, damage buildings and cripple transport networks nationwide.
Amber wind warnings cover parts of South West and South East England, where conditions will be most severe. Northern England, the Midlands, Wales and southern Scotland all face significant rainfall and strong winds, while Northern Ireland braces for similar disruptive conditions.
The RAC is urging motorists to avoid unnecessary journeys, warning of sudden wind gusts and debris-strewn roads. Drivers who must travel should reduce speed, check tyre pressure and prepare for aquaplaning on flooded surfaces.
Power companies are on standby as widespread outages loom. Coastal communities face particular danger from large waves and spray, with residents warned to stay clear of seafronts and piers.
Yellow warnings blanket much of the remaining UK, indicating widespread disruption even beyond the amber zones. Despite mild temperatures of 8-12°C, wind chill will make conditions feel much colder.
Emergency services stress the importance of monitoring Met Office updates as Storm Goretti tracks across the country over the coming days.
