K-pop sensation Stray Kids have announced they did not submit any of their music for the 2027 Grammy Awards. Their record label, JYP, confirmed the decision, stating simply: “Stray Kids did not submit for the Grammys”.
While no explicit reason was given, the move appears to be a response to the newly introduced 'Asian Pop Music Performance' category for the 2027 awards. This category aims to recognise “artistic excellence” in Asian pop music, requiring meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.
The new category has proven divisive, with fellow K-pop superstars BTS previously declaring their boycott. BTS stated they hoped their music would be “heard and loved for itself, beyond regions or languages,” echoing concerns that the category could segregate genres and make it easier for voters to overlook Asian artists for major awards.
Despite some backlash, Grammys boss Harvey Mason Jr confirmed the category would proceed as planned for the ceremony on February 7, 2027. He acknowledged concerns but noted significant support for its inclusion.
