Stress Epidemic Hits England's Teachers as Union Considers Industrial Action

Research reveals 1 in 3 state school teachers suffer from work-related stress most of the time, prompting calls for pay rises and improved working conditions.

  • Only 1.5% of teachers surveyed reported no work-related stress
  • Long hours, workload pressure, and staff shortages contribute to teacher stress
  • NEU members gather in Harrogate this week to debate industrial action over pay

Teacher wellbeing has reached crisis point in England's schools, with a staggering 98.5% of staff experiencing work-related stress - a stark reminder of the unsustainable pressures facing educators. The grim statistics emerged as the National Education Union (NEU) holds its annual conference in Harrogate, where industrial action over pay and working conditions is set to be debated.

One-third of state school teachers surveyed by the NEU revealed they are stressed at work for at least four-fifths of the time. The research highlighted chronic staff shortages, retention issues, and a lack of support staff as major contributors to workload problems - further exacerbated by absences due to illness.
