Student bank accounts: Overdraft size more important than freebies

Personal finance experts advise students to prioritise interest-free overdraft limits over sign-up perks when choosing a bank account for the 2026-27 academic year.

  • Experts recommend focusing on the interest-free overdraft as it may offer greater value over a degree than one-off freebies.
  • Save the Student's top picks for 2026-27 include NatWest/RBS, Nationwide FlexStudent, and Santander Edge student accounts.
  • Maintenance loans reportedly fall short of living costs by an average of £502 per month.

Students are being advised by personal finance experts to prioritise the size of an interest-free overdraft when selecting a student bank account for the 2026-27 academic year, rather than being swayed by freebies.

Caitlyn Eastell from Moneyfactscompare.co.uk stated that an interest-free overdraft "could provide greater value over the course of a degree than a one-off freebie." This advice is echoed by Save the Student, whose ranking of the best student bank accounts for 2026-27 also emphasises the interest-free overdraft.

Tom Allingham, a student banking expert at Save the Student, noted that "Maintenance loans now fall short of living costs by an average of £502 per month." The website's top recommendations for this year are the NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) student account, Nationwide FlexStudent, and the Santander Edge student account.

Available perks vary, with some accounts offering cash, railcards, or vouchers, while others provide access to prize draws. Overdraft limits also differ, with some accounts offering up to £3,250 interest-free from year three onwards.

It is important to remember that interest-free overdrafts are not permanent; most convert to graduate accounts after a year or two, after which interest may be charged on unpaid balances.

Why this matters: Choosing the right student bank account, particularly one with a suitable interest-free overdraft, could help students manage their finances given that maintenance loans reportedly do not cover average living costs.

What this means for you: If you are a student, considering an interest-free overdraft's size may be more beneficial than focusing on initial freebies when opening a new bank account.
