Super Furry Animals to Sponsor Welsh Football Club Cwmbran Celtic

Welsh indie-rock band Super Furry Animals will be the shirt sponsor for Cwmbran Celtic this football season, marking a return to football kit sponsorship for the band after nearly three decades.

  • Super Furry Animals will sponsor Cwmbran Celtic's shirts this season.
  • Scottish band Mogwai has sponsored the men's away strip, with 10% of profits going to a grassroots music charity.
  • The move reflects a trend of bands and football teams monetising "adjacent audiences" through marketing and merchandising opportunities.

Welsh indie-rock band Super Furry Animals will sponsor Cwmbran Celtic's shirts for the upcoming football season. This marks the first time the band's logo has appeared on a football kit in nearly three decades, following their sponsorship of Cardiff City's Welsh Cup run in 1999.

Cwmbran Celtic, recently relegated from Wales's second tier, is located in the town where Super Furry Animals send their stage props for repair. The band's frontman Gruff Rhys and bassist Guto Pryce are Cardiff City fans.

Scottish post-rock band Mogwai has also entered football sponsorship, backing the men's away strip. Ten percent of the profits from all Mogwai shirt sales will be donated to a grassroots music charity.

This trend of musical acts collaborating with football teams has evolved from traditional patronage to a marketing and merchandising opportunity. Recent examples include Spotify's deal with Barcelona, featuring artists like Coldplay and Rosalía on shirts, and Manchester United's pre-match shirts bearing The Stone Roses' album artwork.
