Super League clubs reject initial NRL investment offer

Super League clubs have turned down an initial offer from Australia's NRL for a £7 million per year investment over five years in exchange for equity.

  • Super League clubs rejected an initial NRL offer of £7 million annually for five years in return for equity.
  • NRL supremo Peter V’Landys is expected in the UK within the next fortnight to negotiate a deal.
  • The league's broadcasting deal with Sky Sports is entering its final months, with future coverage dependent on the NRL deal.

Super League clubs have rejected an initial investment offer from Australia's National Rugby League (NRL). The proposal would have seen the NRL invest £7 million annually for the next five years in exchange for equity in Super League.

Clubs are set to meet again this week to discuss the potential deal. Peter V’Landys, the NRL's supremo, is scheduled to travel to the UK within the next fortnight to further negotiate.

The future of Super League's broadcasting is also in question, as the league is in the final months of its exclusive agreement with Sky Sports. Next year, Sky Sports will show three games per round. The location of the remaining four games depends on whether a deal with the NRL is reached. If the NRL deal proceeds, a partnership with Dazn is considered likely, while Premier Sports is interested if the NRL deal falls through.
