A 19-year-old man, Camron Harris, has been arrested in connection with a shooting that injured five people on the campus of Virginia State University (VSU) on Saturday. Authorities stated that Harris, who is not enrolled at the university, was found hiding in a dormitory closet in Seward Hall at 4pm on Saturday, more than 14 hours after the shooting occurred at approximately 1.30am.
Harris has been taken to Chesterfield County jail and is being held without bond. He faces four counts each of malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to police, who also indicated that additional charges may be filed.
Chesterfield County police reported that officers found five people with gunshot wounds outside campus dormitories. All five victims were transported to local hospitals, with one victim in critical condition with a life-threatening wound. The other four victims sustained non-life-threatening wounds, and at least one of them, a 20-year-old, was confirmed to be a student.
Police have not yet released details regarding a possible motive, stating that the investigation is ongoing. VSU initially reported multiple suspects and placed the campus on lockdown, but later said authorities did not believe there was any immediate threat to the school community.
