Sweden is holding its parliamentary election today, 13 September 2026, with a close race anticipated between the left and right-wing blocs. The election could see the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD) enter government for the first time.
Current Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, leader of the centre-right Moderates, has promised ministerial posts for the SD if his coalition is returned to power. In 2022, Kristersson formed a minority government with the SD's support, which gave them influence over policy, particularly on crime and immigration.
The opposition "red" bloc is led by former prime minister Magdalena Andersson of the Social Democrats. Recent polling indicates a narrow lead for the centre-left, with less than one percentage point separating the blocs.
Polls opened at 8am local time and are scheduled to close at 8pm local time (7pm UK). Exit polls from Swedish broadcasters SVT and TV4 are expected shortly after polls close, with a further projection from SVT about an hour later as initial results emerge.
