Australia's busiest airport, Sydney Kingsford Smith, is set to undergo a 20-year expansion project following the approval of its Master Plan 2045 by the Australian government. The plan aims to increase the airport's annual passenger capacity to more than 70 million travellers, nearly doubling its 2025 traffic of 42.5 million passengers.
The redevelopment includes a northern extension to Terminal 1, which will provide additional facilities such as baggage reclaim. A southern expansion will accommodate new passenger processing facilities and an apron reconfiguration to support next-generation aircraft.
To streamline the passenger experience, the plan also involves merging Terminals 2 and 3 to integrate domestic, regional, and international operations. The airport anticipates its annual economic contribution will grow to approximately $70 billion AUD (£37 billion), supporting over 105,000 new jobs.
