Sydneysiders have seen the first designs for a new public square, Town Hall Square, which is planned to be built opposite Sydney Town Hall. The City of Sydney released the renders on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, for the project initially conceived more than 40 years ago.
The council is finalising discussions with owners of the last of seven buildings that need to be acquired and demolished for the plaza. Demolition is expected to start in 2028, with a completion date set for 2031. The square's design, demolition, and construction are expected to cost $150m.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore described the proposal as a "once-in-a-generation opportunity." The design, by JPW and Aspect Studios, features a semi-circular clearing with a water feature, movable tables and chairs, and native trees. The fountain is intended to provide a misting effect for cooling, and trees are expected to shade about 50% of the site.
Paul Nicolaou, executive director of Business Sydney, expressed concern that the demolition of seven buildings would create "unwanted disruption" in the city centre. Lord Mayor Moore stated that the council would assist businesses in finding alternative locations.
