Tadej Pogacar, who was forced to withdraw from the Vuelta a España on Saturday after a significant fall, has shared a photograph from hospital. The image, posted on his Instagram account, shows him in a hospital bed wearing a neck brace, and was accompanied by the Bee Gees' song 'Stayin' Alive'.
The UAE Team Emirates rider is awaiting surgery on his collarbone. According to a medical report from his team, Pogacar sustained a concussion, a displaced left clavicle fracture, a stable C7 cervical fracture, and multiple abrasions. The team's statement noted that there were no other major injuries or neurological fallout.
Pogacar crashed during the eighth stage of the Vuelta, approximately 30km from the finish line in Xeraco. At the time of his withdrawal, the 27-year-old was leading the race by 3 minutes and 50 seconds. The Vuelta a España continues on Sunday with stage nine, a 187.5km mountainous ride from Villajoyosa to a summit finish at Alto de Aitana.
