A group of six swimming teachers in Worthing has formed a community interest company, Aquatic 2012, to address what they describe as a "crisis" in children's swimming proficiency. The charity aims to provide discounted swimming lessons to all children and free lessons to those who cannot swim adequately, supplementing school provisions.
Russell Clough, a co-founder of Aquatic 2012, stated that the organisation seeks to raise awareness and increase participation in swimming. He noted an increase in children unable to perform fundamental swimming skills since the pandemic, with some experiencing their first time in a pool during school lessons.
Windlesham House School, a private school in Pulborough, is supporting the initiative by offering its swimming pool and minibuses free of charge for transport. Other local businesses are also providing sponsorship. Transport costs are identified as a significant barrier, with one primary school in Worthing facing a £1,600 coach cost for a week of lessons.
BBC research has found that children in English primary schools with a higher proportion of pupils receiving free school meals are less likely to be able to swim 25m upon leaving. The Department for Education has announced that its new PE Partnership network will deliver £580m in targeted support over the next three years to boost swimming lessons, commencing in Spring 2027.
