Tuskegee University's president, Dr Mark A Brown, informed students and parents last month about a newly enforced dress code. The policy outlines prohibited attire for various campus settings, including classes, the cafeteria, and official events like Convocation.
Under the new guidelines, students are not allowed to wear revealing clothing, bedroom shoes, bonnets, or durags in these specified locations. Dr Brown stated that faculty will be empowered to respond to students who are dressed inappropriately based on these rules.
The policy has led to varied reactions. Supporters view the dress code as reinforcing a tradition of professionalism, aligning with the university's status as a private Historically Black College and University (HBCU). Dissenters, however, argue that the policy is rooted in a politics of respectability and may reinforce anti-Black standards.
