A teenage chef, who garnered attention after a council prohibited him from cooking at his family's food truck, has lent his talents to a local foodbank celebrating a significant milestone. Dexter, 14, from Four Marks in Hampshire, was at Alton Foodbank on Saturday, helping to mark its 15th anniversary by offering live cooking demonstrations and sharing innovative recipes.
During the event, Dexter prepared a variety of tasters for attendees, including a sausage and bean stew, miniature upside-down cakes, and flatbreads. His focus was on creating exciting and flavourful meals using ingredients typically found in a foodbank parcel, demonstrating how to cook on a budget. The young chef expressed his passion for cooking, stating, "This is my heritage, this is my life, this is what I want to do, this is my why."
The family confirmed that Dexter continues to cook, and no further action has been taken by the local authority following the initial ban. UKPulse Media has reached out to Hampshire County Council for comment on the previous decision. Dexter also used the platform to encourage other young people, advising them "to not give up" when faced with setbacks, drawing a parallel to his own experience with the council.
Sian Mills, project manager for Alton Foodbank, explained that the organisation invited Dexter after seeing his story in the news. She described his cooking as "amazing" and noted that residents were particularly impressed by the quality of the recipe cards created by someone so young. Mills highlighted the positive impact of young individuals like Dexter, who are motivated to make a difference in their communities.
Reflecting on the foodbank's 15 years, Ms Mills described it as a "double-edged sword." While acknowledging the unfortunate reality that people still struggle to afford food, she emphasised the positive aspect of 15 years of community generosity, with donations of food, time, and money supporting those less fortunate. The anniversary celebration served as a testament to both ongoing need and sustained community spirit.
