A teenager was allegedly raped in a state-funded residential care home in Queensland on 20 August, in what has been described as a “heinous” act. A staff member is accused of assaulting the girl, who is understood to be intellectually impaired, at the home located west of Brisbane.
Queensland’s child safety minister, Amanda Camm, confirmed that the alleged attack is being investigated. She stated that she has zero tolerance for abuse, particularly concerning vulnerable children in care.
Acting deputy police commissioner Rhys Wildman confirmed an investigation is underway but declined to provide further details, citing the alleged victim’s vulnerability. The out-of-home residential care provider has been contacted for comment.
The government is also looking to establish an agency aimed at improving child protection. Attorney General Deb Frecklington said a bill to establish the Queensland Protection Commission would be introduced to parliament on Wednesday, with a planned launch in early 2027.
