A teenage girl died after the speeding car she was travelling in struck a pothole and entered a river, an inquest into her death has heard. Eden Bunn, 16, was a rear seat passenger in a VW Polo driven by Declan Berry, 18, which was travelling at approximately 90mph before entering the River Nene near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire, on 17 March.
While three other occupants escaped, Eden died from a head injury. Declan Berry's body was recovered two weeks later.
The inquest in Huntingdon heard a police report found the driver's speed was "the most significant contributory factor" to the crash. However, the condition of the road and the presence of potholes also contributed. The speed limit on that stretch of North Brink is 60mph.
The court heard that Cambridgeshire County Council had received 127 recent complaints regarding the road's condition. A survey conducted days before the crash identified 98 potholes, and a programme of work had been ordered.
