The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) has announced the finalists for its Young Game Designers Competition, with teenagers from the West of England among the shortlisted candidates.
Matthew, a 15-year-old from Portishead near Bristol, is one of the 51 finalists. His game, 'Overclocked', is a sci-fi action game focused on momentum, timing, and speed running. Matthew spent months writing code for the game and is thrilled to see his hard work recognised in the competition.
Other finalists include Rikka, a 14-year-old from Frome in Somerset, who entered her game concept 'Beyond the Horizon' - an astronaut is stranded on a planet awaiting rescue by her teammates. Rikka and her friends started playing games during the Covid-19 pandemic, which inspired her to make her own game.
The competition provides young people with hands-on experience and pathways into the gaming industry. Finalists will receive mentorship from professionals in the industry and have the opportunity to connect with people and ask questions. The final is set to take place on Thursday and will be live-streamed on BAFTA's YouTube channel at 17:00 BST.
