World number 19 Ekaterina Alexandrova retired from her first-round match at the Memphis Classic after collapsing on court. The incident occurred due to high temperatures, which reached 34C during the match.
Alexandrova, the number one seed, was trailing 7-6 (7-2) 4-6 5-4 against 16-year-old Kristina Liutova. The match was paused as Alexandrova attempted to continue, and she later received a time violation before falling to the ground during the next point.
The 31-year-old received immediate medical attention. She was reportedly well enough to stand but had to forfeit the match, which had lasted more than three hours.
