Transport for London (TfL) is currently running a public consultation regarding the West London Orbital rail project. This follows a period of increased activity concerning proposed new transport infrastructure projects in London.
Separately, the results of a previous consultation on the DLR extension to Thamesmead have been made public. These results indicate significant popular support for the extension.
These projects, along with Crossrail 2 and the Bakerloo Line extension, have been identified as being on TfL's to-do list since before 2016. Crossrail 2 has been mothballed since November 2020, with an earliest possible opening in the 2050s. The estimated cost for Crossrail 2 has risen from £32.6bn in 2016 to an estimated £45bn. The cost of the DLR extension reportedly doubled between 2020 and 2026.
TfL's debt has increased from £9.1bn in 2016 to £13.9bn in 2026, making it the most indebted local authority body in the UK. City Hall also holds £4.7bn of debt.
