TfL has unveiled an innovative scheme offering free annual Santander Cycles passes to 'Knowledge' taxi candidates, a move that could significantly ease the financial burden on those studying to become licensed London cabbies. The initiative aims to provide aspiring black cab drivers with a cost-effective means of navigating the capital's complex streets while honing their geographical knowledge.
The free annual passes, valued at over £120, will grant successful applicants unlimited access to Santander Cycles for 12 months from activation. This perk is particularly relevant as 'Knowledge' candidates are required to memorise thousands of London streets, landmarks and points of interest within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross – often undertaken on mopeds or bicycles during their intensive study period.
The 'Knowledge of London', considered one of the world's most challenging geographical tests, takes an average of two to four years to complete. The rigorous programme ensures black cab drivers possess unparalleled knowledge of London's layout, enabling them to provide efficient and reliable transport services without reliance on satellite navigation systems.
This move is part of TfL's broader efforts to support the black cab trade – a vital component of London's transport infrastructure. By providing free access to Santander Cycles, TfL aims to promote a sense of community among 'Knowledge' students, alleviate financial burdens and encourage active travel in line with its objectives to reduce private vehicle reliance and improve air quality in the city.
Eligible candidates can apply for the free passes, available for a limited time. This initiative underscores TfL's commitment to maintaining high standards within London's iconic black cab service while promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport for residents and visitors alike.
