TfL has announced a generous incentive for aspiring black cab drivers, offering a year's free access to Santander Cycles to help them master the capital's complex street layout. Under the scheme, candidates studying for the notoriously challenging 'Knowledge of London' examination will receive unlimited 30-minute rides on the bike-sharing service.
The gruelling 'Knowledge of London' test requires candidates to memorise an astonishing 320 routes within a six-mile radius of Charing Cross, along with thousands of landmarks and points of interest. This demanding process can take years to complete, involving multiple oral examinations known as 'appearances'. For those undertaking this rigorous training, TfL's free cycle offer could prove a game-changer, allowing them to explore the city's streets in person and enhance their learning experience.
Currently, around 650 candidates are working towards becoming licensed taxi drivers in London. Of these, approximately 100 individuals are at the 'All London' stage – the most advanced level of the examination. These candidates will likely benefit most from the new initiative, as they are already intensely focused on mastering detailed street navigation and route memorisation.
This scheme is also in line with TfL's broader strategy to promote active travel across the capital. By encouraging cycling, TfL aims to reduce congestion, improve air quality, and support public health goals – all of which will have a positive impact on Londoners' lives.
Eligible candidates can redeem their free Santander Cycles pass by following specific instructions communicated directly by TfL. Further information about the 'Knowledge of London' programme and application process is available on the TfL website.
