Transport for London (TfL) has initiated a public consultation regarding significant alterations to two prominent bus routes, the 283 and 72, which operate within the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham and surrounding areas. The proposed changes are designed to enhance the reliability and efficiency of these services, addressing existing operational challenges that have impacted passenger experience.
Under the new proposals, the 283 bus route would see a notable modification to its terminal point. Currently, the 283 serves a route between East Acton and Hammersmith Bus Station, passing through key locations such as Shepherds Bush Green. The suggested change would involve rerouting the 283 to terminate directly at Hammersmith bus station, rather than continuing to its current end point. This adjustment is intended to streamline the route and mitigate issues related to bus turning movements and congestion at the existing terminus.
In conjunction with the changes to the 283, TfL is also proposing an extension of the 72 bus route. The 72 currently runs between East Acton and Roehampton. The new plans suggest extending this service to East Acton, effectively compensating for the altered section of the 283 route and maintaining connectivity for passengers in the affected areas. This integrated approach aims to ensure that residents continue to have access to public transport options, even as specific routes are adjusted.
The rationale behind these proposed modifications stems from a desire to improve the overall operational performance of the bus network in this part of West London. TfL has identified that the current routing of the 283, particularly its terminus, contributes to delays and unreliability. By adjusting the routes, TfL hopes to reduce journey times, improve adherence to schedules, and ultimately provide a more dependable service for thousands of daily commuters.
The public consultation period for these changes commenced recently and is scheduled to conclude on 28th April 2024. Residents, commuters, and all interested parties are encouraged to provide their feedback on the proposals. TfL will review all submissions before making a final decision on the implementation of the changes, ensuring that community input is considered in the planning process.
These adjustments are part of TfL's ongoing efforts to optimise London's extensive bus network, responding to changing travel patterns, infrastructure developments, and operational requirements. Such consultations are a standard part of TfL's procedure for route modifications, allowing for public engagement on decisions that directly impact local communities and transport provision.
